Design and music kissed me at about the same time. When I was a teenager, I walked around in Bowie t-shirts, and ripped up hip huggers. I navigated slowly from that point, and made many fashion blunders, and probably still do, 😂but that’s the beauty of fashion!

Music brought about major expression in fashion throughout my lifetime. From the flashy polyester suits and halter dresses at Disco’s to the safety pins and DIY clothes of Punk Rock shows at CBGB’s, the 70’s and 80’s fused fashion and music like a fresh fruitcake. Not everyone embraced it, but when they did, they devoured it. Some of my favorite designers emerged at this time. Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, and Vivianne Westwood paid homage to Punk & New Wave. The Lower East Side was a great place to see view street fashion. True individuals paraded through St Mark’s Square and caught my attention as I studied them through Dojo’s window over a cheap soy burger platter.

One of my favorite designers, Anna Sui, is also one of the most successful. I remember reading about her throughout the 80’s & when she opened her store on Greene Street in NYC, I flocked to it. (By the 90’s, I didn’t frequent St. Marks Place to shop as much, and moved into Soho.) The store was dark and had a punk feel with mannequin heads and vintage furniture, but somehow it felt new. She always stood out like a Rock Star and dressed many of them. She’s the designer who fits the moniker, “just when you think she’s done it all..”.

Marc Jacobs is a maverick, as well. He had the bravery to put grunge on a runway. He makes clothes for people, very non-genre specific, that look tailored to, and serves whoever is wearing his apparel well.

I could go on and on about the trend setters and Mavericks that made an impression on me. I will in the future. I just wanted to touch the surface of a beautiful coloring book with melted crayons so far out of the lines, it sets them apart.
